The decision to establish the East Africa Regional Office was taken during a special meeting and ceremony in Khartoum, Sudan in March 2018, based on strategic planning and bye laws of AAU and attended by all authorized person from AAU and Sudan government and officials of Heads of African Institutions of Higher Education in the region were also participated at the University of Khartoum.
Accordingly, legal memorandum of understanding where Ministry of Foreign Affairs hereby granted full powers to be signed between the AAU and University of Khartoum to host the East Africa Regional Office.
The Office has provided to be a platform for research, reflection, consultation, debates, co-operation and collaboration on issues pertaining to higher education. It will also provide a range of services to its members and served East African higher education in a variety of ways. It has established and increased its role in the regions and is thus able, at reasonable notice, to assemble teams of experts in relevant fields from the regions. It operates and works according to AAU policies and guidance.
The East Africa Regional Office possesses a unique capacity to convene higher education institutional leaders and policy-makers from all parts of the continent and on key issues related to African higher education and development, as demonstrated in the general organizational strategies and African Union (AU) recommendations. In addition, the Office provides leadership in the identification of emerging issues and support for debating them and facilitating appropriate follow-up action by its members, partners and other stakeholders. And collaborative organizations and funding agencies.
